Challenged by decreases in unit sales and low food-at-home inflation throughout the year, food retailing advanced sales 1.3 percent over 2017, according to insights firm IRI. This means 2017 was yet another year in which confectionery (+1.8%), salty snacks (+3.0%) and cookies (+1.7%) outpaced the overall store growth. Additionally, online sales are enjoying double digit growth across key segments of both treating and snacking.
Online growth is led by salty snacks and non-chocolate candy. While the sales base is still relatively small, the gains indicate growing consumer comfort levels with purchasing confectionery and snack items online.
|Snacking||2017 online growth||Treating||2017 online growth|
|Salty snacks||+58%||Non-chocolate candy||+44%|
|Dried meat snacks||+31%||Chocolate candy||+27%|
